Ever seen that guy on your team who dishes out more assists than your grandma at Thanksgiving dinner? Well, in beer league hockey, we’ve got plenty of ’em. In beer league hockey, we’ve got defensive dynamos who excel at blocking shots and swiping pucks like magicians, and defensive duds. You’ll see guys and gals sacrificing their bodies to stop a shot, and they do it with a mix of courage and a touch of crazy. It’s like they’re channeling Gandalf,  “Thou Shall Not Pass”, and they’re doing it with gusto.

There have been defenseman in my league who would block shots with any body part that was available—legs, arms, even once with his helmet– broke his shield (no injury)! Defensive players, you keep our goals against down and our laughter up. As for the defensive duds, well, we’re still rooting for you.

Goaltending Marvels:

Ah, the goalies of beer league hockey, the unsung heroes who stand between victory and, well, more victory. These folks boast save percentages that would make a bank account jealous, and they pull off shutouts that are rarer than a unicorn sighting.

I’ve got a goalie buddy who’s got more padding than a mattress store and still can’t get a good night’s sleep. Once, he made 50 saves in a game, and we still lost! Goalies, you’re the backbone of our beer league dreams, and your chugging is as legendary as your glove saves.

Overtime Thrillers:

Get ready for the heart-pounding, sweat-dripping, nail-biting world of overtime in beer league hockey. These sudden-death periods are like a rollercoaster ride through a haunted house, filled with more twists and turns than a soap opera. You never know when that game-winning goal will come, and it’s as unpredictable as your buddy’s slapshot after a few too many brews.

One of my games that went into triple overtime, and we were so exhausted we started debating whether we should order pizza to the rink– we already had the beer. So, when you go into OT, remember, anything can happen because overtime in beer league hockey is like a suspense thriller on ice. And, God help you if your league does shootouts!

The Penalty Parade:

Now, let’s talk about penalties. In beer league hockey, the penalty minutes can pile up faster than empty beer cups at a post-game celebration. Tripping, slashing, hooking—you name it, we’ve seen it. It’s like a parade of players marching to the penalty box, each with a different excuse.

Some players spend more time in the box than on the ice. This guy in my league collected so many penalty minutes; we thought he was trying to set a world record. Ahead of the league total minutes by 20! Remember, folks, penalties are like souvenirs in beer league hockey—everyone gets one, but some folks collect ’em.

They had a way of drawing opponents into the penalty box with them, and we all marveled at their ability to walk that fine line between being an annoyance and a game-changer. So, whether you love ’em or love to hate ’em, they’re an essential part of what makes beer league hockey the unique and entertaining experience that it is.

I recently played in my first 3rd Line Draught tournament, and I will say that I’ll continue playing in more! I’ve played in other draft-style hockey tournaments before, but this one far exceeded the others. The staff who ran the tournament were extremely friendly and helpful. All of the other players who signed up were a blast to not only play hockey with, but hangout with off the ice. I also appreciated the fact that we had our pictures taken and we got those pictures back to us very quickly. And we never ran out of beer! It was a great environment overall.

Amidst the shadows of daily life, depression becomes a relentless companion, testing our strength and resilience.

In the midst of a bustling world, countless individuals find themselves entangled in the dark web of depression. They trudge through life, weighed down by an unseen force that saps their energy, joy, and motivation. The stories of each individual is as diverse as it is heart-wrenching but, regardless of the cause, the experience of depression can be isolating and confusing. This makes it difficult for sufferers to find their way out of the darkness.

For one individual the journey has made a surprising turn following his experience with 3rd Line Hockey, an adult ice hockey tournament company based in the United States.

Hockey players love the exhilaration of the game, the thrill of scoring a goal, and the camaraderie of being part of a team. These are the things that make hockey so special to them. But as much love for the game as players have, they also know that it can be tough to find a supportive group where you can grow and thrive as a player. That’s where 3rd Line Hockey comes in.

Alexander Clarke felt the electric atmosphere when he attended a 3rd Line tournament in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Alexander Clarke is a vibrant and energetic soul, but he has been silently grappling with the heavy burden of depression for a significant portion of his life. At the age of 18, he experienced his initial encounter with depression in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This devastating event left him with a house but devoid of most possessions and separated from friends who were forced to relocate. Concealing his true emotions behind a well-crafted facade, Alexander’s smile never revealed the depth of the abyss he found himself in.

Hockey was a huge part of his life and for the first time since he was 13, Clarke couldn’t play hockey. Due to rink closures that lasted over two years as a result of the hurricane, he had lost his outlet. Throughout his adult life the overwhelming weight of his internal battle left him drained, as if constantly swimming against a powerful current.

Despite the support of loved ones and friends, the darkness that enveloped him led to moments where surrender seemed like the only option. Although he had sought therapy in the past, it wasn’t until recently that he discovered a suitable therapist. In these times of despair, Alexander’s resilience was tested to its limits. He fought valiantly to keep hope alive and search for a beacon of light amidst the shadows.

However, financial troubles threatened to keep Alexander from his sanctuary. Then, fate intervened in the form of 3rd Line Hockey and Randy & Shelly Bishop.

As the leaders of 3rd Line Hockey, they generously worked with Alexander to ensure he could join them in Colorado. Grateful for the opportunity, Alexander embraced the experience wholeheartedly. He was met with open arms by the welcoming and supportive body of players.

For the fist time in a long time laughter filled the air as jokes were exchanged and friendships were strengthened. Even the lighthearted twerking sessions in the locker room served as a reminder of the simple joys that life can offer. As Alexander skated alongside his teammates, he felt the icy grip of depression loosening its hold. Definatly replaced by the warmth of friendship and the thrill of competition.

Alexander’s experiences within the 3rd Line Hockey’s community helped break down the walls of his depression, allowing him to see life through a new lens. The genuine connections he formed while in Colorado gave him a renewed sense of purpose and happiness. Looking back, Alexander firmly believes that joining 3rd Line was a turning point in his life. This experience ultimately saved him from the depths of his despair.

Hank had been playing beer league for a few years and had made a name for himself as not being one of the worst players on the team. On this particular night, Hank was feeling particularly confident and decided to take a chance. He wound up for what he thought would be the perfect slap shot, but unfortunately, it was not and the puck went flying in a completely different direction. The entire rink erupted in laughter as Hank stumbled and fell onto the ice, embarrassed and red-faced. As the laughter died down, Jim picked himself up off the ice and skated back to the bench. His teammates were still laughing and joking about his failed attempt.

The slap shot requires a great deal of power, accuracy, and technique to be successful. It is one of the most difficult shots in hockey to master. It is not only important to have the correct form, but also to be able to generate enough force to propel the puck at high speeds. The player must use their whole body to generate power, with their hips, legs, and arms all involved in the motion. 

This is where Hank found his first problem: his less-than-optimal physical condition.

Ever Wonder What Goes Into a Slap Shot?

Hank began by winding up his stick like a golf club and then quickly uncoiling it with a full swing at the puck. Now, the stick should be kept close to the body and followed through the shot all the way to the end. Keeping your eyes focused on the puck throughout the entire shot, this will help you stay focused and ensure you are hitting the puck in the right spot. However, Hank doesn’t wear his glasses when he plays and only saw a blurry spot on the ice.

Hank should have made sure that his weight was shifted to his back foot as he wound up for the shot. And then, should have shifted his weight to the front foot when he hit the puck. 

He wanted to increase his power so, he tried to focus on using his whole body to generate force. His hips, legs, and arms should have all been involved but, they were not.

Additionally, Hank should have made sure that his hands were in the correct position on the stick. His wrists were not loose, so he didn’t get the maximum amount of power from the shot, but it was enough to knock him over.

Here’s The Science..

The power of the shot is a result of a weight transfer from the wind up through the follow through. Therefore, having strong core muscles such as the low back, abdominals, hips, and thighs is paramount for maximum slap shot power. The strong er these core muscles, the harder the slap shot.

As the player brings the stick down in a powerful downswing, the ice will be met with a resounding crack. Through the force of the impact, potential energy is stored, like a slingshot, only to be released moments later with an even greater force. Although it may seem like hitting the ice would decrease the speed of the shot by wasting energy, the opposite is true – when the stick is hit three to five inches away from the puck, the puck is propelled even faster.

At this point, following through is an absolute necessity. As the player completes the motion, the stick collides with the puck and is spun off the blade in a manner akin to a wrist shot. Professionals achieve an average blade-puck contact of .38 milliseconds, exerting a force of approximately 100 pounds on the puck. In the air, the spin of the puck keeps it stable, making for a better shot and an increase of speed that can exceed 100 miles per hour. This speed is enough to knock a defensive player on his ass.

The Hockey Stick and It’s Role In Your Slap shot

The hockey stick is a vital component in crafting a powerful slap shot, featuring two components of the shaft that help your shot. First, there’s the flex number – a metric that shows the weight required to bend the stick one inch, which is printed on the stick itself. The higher the flex number, the better suited the stick is for a forceful slap shot. The second element of the shaft is the kick point: the spot where the stick will bend. For stick-handling and a wrist shot or snapshot, opt for a lower kick point. But, for slap shots, try a mid kick point for more power.

Improving Your Slap Shot Off the Ice

In order to increase power, Hank wanted to work on his off-ice training by focusing on strengthening his core muscles, if he had any. His trainer told him he can also work on improving his flexibility and range of motion. Hank practiced his slap shot technique regularly, focusing on proper form and accuracy. Hank came up with a system, every set he rewarded himself with a beer, and he was sticking to it!
